As the warm weather settles in for the next couple of months, I’m sure many people are just as happy as I am. Unfortunately, the heat, sun and humidity are all taking a toll on your hair. I find the extreme weather in both summer and winter dries out my hair, but the humidity of the summer months takes a bad hair day to a whole new level.
As someone who dyes my hair on a regular basis (it’s hard work being blonde!) and, honestly, doesn’t get it cut as much as I should (I know, I know, I’m bad), I’m always looking for solutions to the brittle tresses summer weather brings. The good news is, I’ve found an easy DIY solution and you just might already have the ingredients in your house.
Coconut oil and olive oil. Although usually used in cooking, these two will work wonders on your dry hair. I had just experienced a slight hair dye mishap before I tried this so my hair was pretty dry and I used more than the average person probably would. You can use as much or as little as you want but I should warn you, it can be hard to get out. Depending on the damage level of yours, I would only use a small amount at first so your hair doesn’t look greasy after washing it out.
I used 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Mix the two together and apply to your hair. It should be applied to the driest parts of the ends. If you want to do your whole head, just avoid rubbing it into your scalp. Let it sit in your hair for 15-30 minutes, again, depending on the level of dryness. You can leave it open or put it up with a warm towel to lock in the moisture, completely up to you! After the time has passed, shampoo and condition your hair as usual. It may take two shampoos to get it completely out if your hair still feels oily after the first rinse. Air dry your hair, and style as usual. Voilà! You should notice a difference as soon as you’re done; my hair felt super soft and hydrated.
